Arseny Semenov

  • Arseny Semenov 1911~1992
  • Semenov was born in 1911 in the village of Maksimovo, Province of Vitebsk and started drawing whilst a child. At the age of 15, without money or privilege, he moved to Leningrad where he obtained work in the foundry of a heavy electrical equipment factory. At the same time he entered a studio run by the Artist Association of Revolutionary Russia and subsequently became a member of D N Kardovsky’s workshop at the All-Russia Art and Industry School.
  • His career of painting and teaching was interrupted at the onset of the second world war when he was conscripted into the Tank Corps. Initially a private in the Great Siberian Reserve Forces, within a year he became the commanding officer of a battalion.
  • Severely wounded in 1943, he lost none of his determination or artistic ability and presented himself at the Surikov Art School in Moscow where he taught for 3 years and produced a significant number of paintings based on his military experiences.
  • Semenov returned to Leningrad in 1947 to teach painting at the Mukhina Academy and exhibited his work with the Artists’ Union for the next forty years
