  • Original hand printed Japanese woodblock print
  • Settai studied nihonga (Japanese style painting) under Araki Kampo (1831~1915) in the early 1900s. Working on the prestigious arts journal ‘Kokka’ he learnt his woodblock printing craft and was in demand as an illustrator and graphic artist and latterly theatre & film set design.
  • He developed a unique, distinctive style influenced by early ukiyo-e masters such as Harunobu (c1725~1770) and Buncho (1763~1841) and the black and white drawing technique of Aubrey Beardsley (1872~1898) which had itself been influenced by the style of Japanese ukiyo-e.
